POSITION TITLE:  LOAN OFFICER, SOUTHERN VIRGINIA

CIC is expanding into Southern Virginia, and we’re seeking an entrepreneurial and engaging Loan Officer to play a crucial role in this growth. The position will be at the forefront of bringing microloan and financing options to small business owners in Southern Virginia, focusing on the cities of Danville and Martinsville and the counties of Pittsylvania, Henry, and Patrick. This role offers a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on the region’s economic landscape by providing vital access to capital and comprehensive support for under-resourced entrepreneurs, contributing to economic development and community strengthening through our inclusive and collaborative approach.

A.  JOB SUMMARY

The Loan Officer is a full-time professional position responsible for managing relationships with potential borrowers of CIC’s lending programs. The Loan Officer works directly with entrepreneurs to support them during the loan application process and conducts regular check-ins after loans are made. The role will require significant travel throughout 15 counties in southern Virginia, with a focus in the greater Danville and Martinsville area. The ideal candidate would be self-motivating, strong in both independent and collaborative work, and comfortable and skilled in having engaging conversations. The Loan Officer will report to CIC’s Director of Lending and Operations.

This person would be part of a team culture that thrives in ownership, constructive question-asking, and a deep understanding that our impact is collaborative.

B.  DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Within the limits of the CIC’s programs, policies, procedures, and budget, the Loan Officer is responsible for and has authority to perform the duties listed below:

  • Responsible to CIC’s small business lending goals for its Southern Virginia expansion
  • Assists with community outreach and engagement to promote loan program and identify prospective applicants
  • Collaborates with the CIC RISE Navigators to identify client’s financing needs
  • Meets with potential borrowers to identify needs, assess readiness and guide through loan application process
  • Underwrites completed applications and presents to the CIC loan committee
  • Manages all aspects of loan closing after approval and properly securing collateral
  • Maintains knowledge of SBA procedures and organization loan policies
  • Provides outstanding customer service to assist borrowers with any questions they may have about their current outstanding balances or any documentation needed.
  • Supports the department through maintenance of electronic and paper borrower files. 
  • Ensures records are complete and organized. Manages all aspects of the external collateral filings
  • Engage with borrowers after closing for continuous relationship building
  • Engage with delinquent borrowers to encourage good standing

C.  REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 1-2 years of working experience in business or nonprofit sectors
  • Ability to communicate effectively, gain trust, and work with low-income individuals of diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and operate independently as tasks require
  • Proficiency with Google Workplace and MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Google sheets, Google folders, etc.)
  • Intermediate Excel skills with the ability to understand and write basic formulas, develop charts and graphs for presentations, and summarize large datasets.
  • Ability to learn loan management systems and databases, credit information systems, and public record research, such as DownHome Solutions, Transunion, Lenderfit, and CBA Reporter
  • Proactive, professional, and hardworking, with strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to travel to meet with clients as needed in the Southern Virginia area

D. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.A. or B.S. degree; preference for a degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business Management or equivalent experience
  • Experience in micro-lending and/or business consulting
  • Experience as an entrepreneur, owning a business, or working for a startup business
  • Mastery of financial terms and understanding of the complexities of business finance 
  • Knowledge of entrepreneurial life cycle and how businesses work
  • Financial certifications, licensures, or other forms of financial expertise

E. COMPENSATION

Full time compensation of $55,000 to $60,000 annually plus health insurance, dental insurance, and retirement match.

POSITION TITLE: DIRECTOR, SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER, CENTRAL VIRGINIA

CIC hosts the Central Virginia Small Business Development Center (CV SBDC). The Center operates under a Cooperative Agreement between CIC and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) administered through George Mason University. Efforts on behalf of the Center are performed in accordance with the goals and objectives of the Virginia Small Business Development Center network. The Center includes offices in Charlottesville and Culpeper and  serves the City of Charlottesville and the Counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Nelson, Greene, Orange, Louisa, Madison, Culpeper, and Rappahannock.

CV SBDC has been the top performing SBDC in Virginia for four years, having served 915 clients with over 3151 hours of business advising in 2023, assisting 24 in starting new businesses, and helping businesses secure nearly $51.37 million in capital for their business. In addition to the Director, the CV SBDC team at CIC includes 4 full-time staff, 3 part-time staff, and 10 contract advisers.

A.  JOB SUMMARY

The Director of the Central Virginia Small Business Development Center (CV SBDC) is responsible for providing direction, leadership, and technical support to the staff and clients of the CV SBDC. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic leader with strong adaptive leadership skills, adept at fostering collaborative opportunities both within the organization and with external partners. They should excel in guiding, motivating, teaching, and instructing team members while also demonstrating a commitment to continuous learning and a genuine curiosity about business resources and economic development.

The successful candidate will be able to build and operate within consistent systems across teams, maximizing the strengths of a diverse workforce. They will serve as a key partner in regional economic development, leveraging their business acumen and awareness of resources to support entrepreneurs and small businesses effectively. As part of the CIC Executive Leadership Team, the Director will be directly responsible to and evaluated by the President of CIC, embodying CIC’s Brand Attributes in all interactions and driving the organization’s mission forward.

This position requires some evenings and occasional weekend work.

B.  DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Counseling, Training & Outreach

  • Provides one-on-one counseling and consulting to small business owners.
  • Analyzes and evaluates service needs for clients; Provides in-depth technical assistance in business planning, management, financial analysis, marketing, and related areas of business operations.
  • Designs and delivers small business group training programs.
  • Develops and maintains partnerships with localities and business groups throughout the service region.

Administration of SBDC Program

  • Directs, manages, and supervises the operations of the CV SBDC program and supervises, trains, and evaluates CV SBDC consultants and staff.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates marketing plan for the CV SBDC program, including strategies for program promotion.
  • Develops and fosters funding sources for the CV SBDC to provide resources to “match” SBA funding, plus secure event/program sponsors, as needed
  • Ensures compliance with federal guidelines related to the SBDC program and with Virginia SBDC policies and procedures.
  • Measures and evaluates the impact of SBDC programs and activities
  • Manages center budget expenditures, provides financial oversight for the center, and maintains records for Center operation.  (CIC maintains financial records in accordance with contractual requirements.)
  • Prepares reports for funders, writes proposals for funding program plans, and prepares other official documents for the operation and continuation of the program.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with diverse business communities, including minority-, women- and veteran-owned businesses.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Organizational Leadership

  • Serves as a member of CIC’s leadership team that sets overall direction and strategy for the organization
  • Coordinates the CV SBDC Advisory Council.
  • Participates in Virginia SBDC Network meetings and on strategic working groups.

C.  REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 5-10 years experience in business management and consulting or small business ownership
  • Demonstrated ability to advise business owners in critical business management areas, including access to capital, financial management, marketing, business and strategic planning, and business operations.
  • Experience supervising professional and administrative staff
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills including ability to prioritize multiple tasks and willingness to “roll up your sleeves” to get the job done
  • Action-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment and is able to work with diverse industries and clientele
  • Outstanding oral and written communications skills; effective communicator in a variety of presentation settings, including one-on-one and small and large groups
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, Powerpoint, Google Suite;
  • Work ethic, integrity, and creativity

D. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree preferred in business or related field
  • Experience raising funds to support operations of a nonprofit or community organization

  • Comfort and ability to quickly become proficient/use CenterIC (SBDC CRM), Quickbooks Online and Salesforce.

E. COMPENSATION

Full-time compensation of $90,000 to $105,000 annually plus health insurance, dental insurance, and retirement.

Central Virginia Small Business Development Center (CV SBDC) is seeking a communications and events professional for a 40 hour/week, full-time position (Monday-Friday) to work out of our Charlottesville office with one work from home day. A successful candidate will possess project management and communications skills.

  • Assist with communications from social media and newsletters to client stories and our annual report
  • Support and/or design flyers, programs, rosters, name tags, etc. for events
  • Collecting attendee event evaluations and preparing reports related to attendees, and preparing other post-event reports and electronic training files
  • Work with SBDC leadership team to ensure events are scheduled, supported and promoted
  • Coordinate services for events such as accommodation and transportation for speakers/instructors, facilities, catering, signage, displays, special needs requirements, printing and event security
  • Maintain the SBDC Calendar of Events, events related SBDC data management, and external calendars regarding events
  • Use computers for various applications, such as database management, word processing, website events/calendars, social media postings, reports and other documents
  • Provide back-up to the Client Services manager position (when CSC is off or unable to greet callers or visitors). These responsibilities include:
    • greet callers and visitors, handling their inquiries and/or direct them to the appropriate persons according to their needs;
    • work with student interns by involving them in the activities related to SBDC events;
    • operate office equipment, such as fax machines, copiers, or phone systems, troubleshoot problems and arrange for repairs when equipment malfunctions.

This is a full time, 40 hour per week, salary range is $40,000- $45,000. This position reports to the Central Virginia Small Business Development Center Director and is an employee of Community Investment Collaborative (CIC), CV SBDC’s host. As such, this position receives full-time employee benefits and a 401K match as described in the CIC employee handbook.

This position works out of the Charlottesville VA office at 300 Preston Avenue, at the end of the historic downtown mall with free parking. The service territory includes the City of Charlottesville and Counties of Albemarle, Culpeper, Orange, Greene, Rappahannock, Madison, Louisa, Fluvanna and Nelson. Reliable transportation is required with some anticipated travel. Mileage is reimbursed for travel beyond commute to and from the Charlottesville office. Occasional flexible hours are required with some evening or weekend events.

SBDC will provide training and professional development. A successful candidate will be capable of using tools to manage their time and tasks efficiently to keep multiple projects moving forward in a timely manner. This position is supported by and/or collaborates with interns, contractors, and the CIC/CV SBDC team.

Interns can be assured of having a meaningful impact in the development of a local community organization that supports small businesses.

The Communications Assistant will experience the organic process of entrepreneurship not only through projects assigned but also through the stories and daily realities of CIC clients as they launch and grow their businesses. CIC maintains intimate relationships with its entrepreneur clients in order to ensure full support. Therefore, will similarly have strong connections with the struggles and triumphs of business.

Students will learn the art of communication through CIC’s education programs and stakeholder engagement, the basics of business through the training courses and live client examples (Conducting interviews, writing stories, successful fundraising strategies, community impact measurement, researching businesses, and collecting information.) Furthermore, they will have the opportunity to branch out and learn about other parts of CIC. 

The Communications Assistant will experience the organic process of entrepreneurship not only through assigned projects but also through the stories and daily realities of CIC clients as they launch and grow their businesses. CIC maintains intimate relationships with its entrepreneurs in order to ensure full and ongoing support.

Students will hone their communication skills through CIC’s educational programs and stakeholder engagement and expand their knowledge of business throughout the course of their internship.
