October 4, 2024Renata Miller carries a piece of everywhere she’s been and everything she’s done within her. A deep connection to her Brazilian culture and a willingness to create beautiful memories anywhere inspired her to create Viva la Nosh, a booming boxed tea-time business native to the Charlottesville community. As a military spouse and mother of four, Renata recognized the need to create memories with her children no matter where she was, or how much life threw at her. Viva la Nosh appeals to anyone who loves the memories that delicious baked goods and special occasions can create and wants to bring them to even the busiest of schedules. Viva la Nosh’s tea-time box sets come equipped with tea, Renata’s homemade baked goods, and customizable, compostable paper dishes that make each tea party unique.
Renata came up with the idea for Viva la Nosh after realizing her passion for baking. After her husband’s return from Iraq, her family grew in California. In the midst of mothering, homeschooling her children, and an upcoming move to Omaha, she found herself searching for time to pursue her passion. Baking became an important balance for her that explored not only her love for the activity but also brought her closer to her children. Renata began combining her pastries with drinks to create tea parties for her daughters. “I always did a lot of tea parties with the girls, and I love the treats, not just the treats, but the environment. I like that it’s like a special occasion that brings people together with delicious little treats,” she said. After experiencing that time together with her daughters, Renata knew she found her passion.
In 2021 Renata moved to Charlottesville, after a year of bonding with the community she decided to take her love for baking and tea parties to the farmer’s market. After finding success with her baked goods, she wondered how she could help people with schedules as busy as hers enjoy her treats. “I thought I would make a tea party in a box with treats, tea, and cups to enjoy your own tea party at the home, or you can give that to somebody. I’ll build the experience.”
Renata says she is passionate about creating affordable opportunities for people to make memories with their loved ones. The story of her business is right in the name, she says. “Viva is celebrating. It’s like celebrating delicious food.” Renata says the CIC Entrepreneur Workshop helped her expand that celebration into the community by connecting her with like-minded business owners and teaching her something new every week.
As a mother, teacher, baker, and small business owner, Renata knows how important the little moments can be. Viva la Nosh seeks to appeal to similarly busy people, looking to build a connection. Through the taste of her baked goods and experience of her boxes, Renata’s passion is palpable in the Charlottesville community.
