Seth Herman Volunteer Profile

August 6, 2019

Seth Herman studied Community Development and Applied Economics in college, as he has always been passionate about community engagement. In school he worked on several projects for small businesses including creating an organic sugar in Honduras and using soccer to teach HIV/AIDS education in the Dominican Republic. Seth also conducted an independent study where he put together a tour for a band that included voter registration rallies. This was his first introduction to the music industry. Seth has been an entrepreneur for a little over 10 years, starting several of his own businesses. Seth created a micro-loan-based record label that has been featured in Forbes magazine, as well as managed and toured with several different bands.

After working for nearly a decade in the music industry, Seth switched careers and enrolled in CIC’s Entrepreneur Workshop, intending to start a business in Charlottesville. Upon graduation, he and his wife, Erin, opened High Tor Gear Exchange, Charlottesville’s first outdoor gear and clothing consignment store. The company offers used hiking and camping equipment. Today, Seth also works in the commercial solar industry as a Senior Development Manager at Sun Tribe Solar, where he focuses on bringing electricity to school districts throughout Virginia.

In the Fall of 2018, Seth began volunteering with CIC as a Workgroup Leader. “Volunteering with CIC was amazing because I was able to share in the creation of new businesses in such a personal and direct way,” he says. Seth especially valued being able to support entrepreneurs who were “in an incredible but challenging phase of their businesses.” “You connect with the entrepreneurs in a way that is really rare, by providing support, inspiration, and fostering community,” he says. While being a workgroup leader was a huge commitment, he emphasizes how rewarding the experience was.

Thank you, Seth, for your support of CIC!
