Earl Vallery: Entrepreneur Spotlight

June 30, 2022

Bowerbird Bakeshop is an eclectic scratch bakery focused on interesting and seasonal pastries.

Earl Vallery, the owner, has been in the pastry world for 15+ years now. After working in numerous establishments for other people, he decided to open his own shop to produce “the kind of fun, fancy, cheap, nice, non-fussy baked goods” that he likes to make and eat.

At Bowerbird Bakeshop, they focus on seasonality and limited-ran items rather than everything all of the time. Earl has found a good rhythm in rotating items in and out periodically and creating pastries with local flavorings, fruits, and vegetables when they are at their finest and moving on when that peak has ended. He believes in the magic of having things to look forward to, rather than endlessly available choices.

When we asked him about his participation in the Entrepreneur Workshop, Earl tells us, “CIC completed my education and gave me the financial planning and budgeting tools that I was missing for my business. Making classes affordable and accessible is such an amazing community resource. Also, by providing secure, accessible, fair start-up loans, CIC helped enable me to move from the farmer’s market circuit and into a brick-and-mortar shop.”

Bowerbird Bakeshop is located at 120 10th St NW Charlottesville, VA 22903, next to Mudhouse Coffee & Peloton Station
